Walmart has agreed to pay back its customers for overcharging them for certain items, such as “weighted goods” and “bagged citrus,” as part of a $45 million settlement of a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Walmart’s point-of-sale machines raised the weight of goods when marked at a discounted price, resulting in customers paying more than the advertised price. Walmart has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid trial. Customers who purchased these items between Oct. 19, 2018, and Jan. 19, 2024, may be eligible to submit a claim to receive a portion of the settlement.

To be eligible to submit a claim, customers must have purchased “weighted goods” or “bagged citrus” from Walmart during the specified time period. Receipts are not required for eligibility. The amount each customer can claim varies based on the number of items purchased. Customers who did not retain their receipts can claim between $10 and $25, depending on the quantity of items purchased. Those who retained their receipts can claim 2% of the total cost of the items, up to a limit of $500. In case the total claims exceed the settlement amount, individual payments may be decreased.

To file a claim, customers can do so online through the settlement website or by mailing a claim form to the specified address. The deadline for submitting claims is June 5, 2024. Once the final approval hearing takes place on June 16, 2024, eligible payments will be distributed. However, the process may be delayed by any potential appeals. Updates on the settlement will be provided as new information becomes available. Additionally, customers can stay informed about ongoing settlements, such as Verizon’s recent settlement.
