Abu Dhabi is set to become home to the world’s first esports island, a $1 billion development project spearheaded by True Gamers. The island will feature a workspace dedicated to digital technology and innovation, a resort hotel, training and meeting spaces, and an arena designed to host multi-format events and exhibitions. The location for this groundbreaking project is in the Al Raha district, near the Zayed International Airport, and across the waterway from Yas Island, which is known for hosting prestigious sporting events and offering a variety of entertainment options like theme parks, luxury hotels, and golf courses.

In addition to Yas Island, Abu Dhabi boasts an array of 200 islands, each offering unique amenities and attractions. Huydayriat Island offers a variety of fitness and nature-focused activities, while Saadiyat Island provides cultural, heritage, educational, and recreational opportunities. These islands are part of a $10 billion investment plan by the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, which aims to boost the nation’s annual GDP by $24.5 billion by the end of the decade. The development of an esports island aligns with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, the government’s roadmap for achieving a sustainable economy.

The UAE’s investment in transforming its economy from oil-based operations to knowledge-based industries is driven by a desire for social impact rather than purely economic development. NYU Stern School of Business dean Robert Salomon notes that this unique approach aims to transition the country towards a services and knowledge-based economy without relying on export-led growth. Sports and sports-led development play a key role in this strategy, as they are seen as indicators of a developed society that prioritizes leisure time and social pursuits.

Abu Dhabi’s increasing focus on sports, arts, entertainment, and creative services reflects a shift towards a society that values leisure and cultural pursuits. The region’s growing presence in the esports industry is evidenced by the success of events like the Blast Premier World Final, which recently returned to Abu Dhabi for the second time. Esports-related revenue in the region saw an annual increase of almost eight percent last year, reaching nearly $2 billion, with Saudi Arabia and the UAE leading the way. Initiatives like Abu Dhabi Gaming, which promotes talent development, game development, digital education, and esports, are further integrating gaming and digital entertainment into the emirate’s cultural landscape.

From its origins in fishing and pearl diving to the era of oil and trade, Abu Dhabi’s economy has evolved to focus on knowledge and culture. The development of projects like the world’s first esports island underscores the emirate’s commitment to becoming a global hub for sports and entertainment. As Abu Dhabi continues to invest in esports and gaming, it is poised to attract further international attention and solidify its status as a leader in the industry.
