Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is facing corruption allegations against his wife, Begoña Gómez. The accusations claim that she used her position to influence business deals. Sánchez denies the allegations but has stated that he will consider resigning after the launch of a judicial investigation into the matter. The investigation was initiated by a right-wing legal platform called Manos Limpias, or “Clean Hands.” Sánchez has canceled his public agenda until he announces on Monday whether he will continue or step down.

Sánchez has been the Prime Minister of Spain since 2018 and was able to form a left-wing coalition government in November to start another four-year term. The allegations against his wife have prompted Sánchez to reflect on his future and whether he should continue leading the government. He accused the right and far right of turning politics into a “mud pit” and causing a “personal attack” on his wife. Sánchez emphasized his love for his wife and the impact that these allegations have had on him personally.

The investigation into the corruption allegations against Begoña Gómez has raised concerns of a governmental crisis just weeks before important regional elections in Catalonia and European elections in June. The court in Madrid will consider the allegations made by Manos Limpias and either proceed with the investigation or dismiss the case. The accusations against Gómez allege that she used her position to influence business deals, although no further information has been provided.

Justice Minister Félix Bolaños has called the allegations against Gómez “false,” and Second Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz has publicly supported Sánchez against what she called an “offensive by the Right.” The Popular Party, which is the leading opposition party, criticized Sánchez for appearing to play the victim instead of taking accountability. Sánchez accused online news sites aligned with the Popular Party and far-right Vox party of spreading untrue allegations that led to the judicial probe.

Sánchez’s decision on whether to continue as Prime Minister will be made after he reflects on the situation with his wife. He described the attack on his wife as “without precedent” and expressed his deep love for her. The allegations against Gómez are seen as an attempt to force Sánchez out of politics. The prospect of a governmental crisis comes at a critical time for Spain, with important elections on the horizon. Sánchez’s future as Prime Minister remains uncertain as the investigation into the corruption allegations against his wife unfolds.
