Egypt and Syria agreed on Saturday to boost cooperation, during the first official visit by a Syrian foreign minister to Cairo in more than a decade and the latest sign of reforming relations between Arab countries and Syria.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry embraced his Syrian counterpart, Faisal al-Miqdad, upon his arrival at the ministry’s headquarters, in the first official visit since before the war in Syria in 2011.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two ministers “agreed to intensify channels of communication between the two countries at various levels during the coming stage, with the aim of addressing issues and topics that affect the interests of the two countries.”
Egypt also renewed its support for efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement to the Syrian crisis as soon as possible.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry published pictures of Shukri warmly welcoming Al-Miqdad at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as during a closed meeting of the two before holding broader discussions.
