‘Unusually powerful’: Australia’s east coast rocked by earthquakes

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Cairns.

The quake hit about 10pm Wednesday, according to the Australian Government Geoscience Australia.

It struck around 130km off the coast of Cairns.

The earthquake was described as “unusually powerful” by Earthquake List Australia.

“The centre of this earthquake had a very shallow depth of 10 km,” it said.

“Shallow earthquakes usually have a larger impact than earthquakes deep in the earth.”

Meanwhile, a 3.1 magnitude tremor hit Grafton in northern NSW about 2pm on Thursday morning.

No damage or injuries have been reported at this stage.
