Toyota Motor has unveiled a new version of the 4Runner SUV for the first time in nearly 15 years, completing a recent redesign of the automaker’s current trucks and SUV lineup. The 2025 4Runner will feature a hybrid engine option for the first time, as well as new high-end trims including “Platinum” and “Trailhunter.” Toyota has dubbed their trucks and SUV lineup as the “five brothers,” which includes the Tacoma and Tundra pickups and the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia SUVs. The 4Runner is the last to be redesigned and will be built on Toyota’s global truck platform.

Pricing for the 2025 4Runner has not yet been released, but starting prices for the 2024 model range from about $41,000 to over $55,000. Previously, the 4Runner had lower fuel ratings, with combined ratings of 17 mpg or less. Toyota has not yet released the fuel economy ratings for the new 4Runner, but their other redesigned trucks and SUVs have shown marked improvements in fuel efficiency. Jack Hollis, executive vice president of Toyota Motor North America, has mentioned expanding their portfolio to include potential hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric models to curb carbon emissions.

The 2025 4Runner will come in nine different models, including the SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. The Trailhunter model will focus on off-road styling and equipment, while the Platinum model will include more convenience and luxury features. A new hybrid engine option will be available, along with a standard turbocharged engine producing 278 horsepower and 317 foot-pounds of torque.

Production of the 2025 4Runner is taking place at Toyota’s Tahara plant in Japan. Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, expressed excitement for the new 4Runner, noting its versatility, capability, and rugged style that customers have come to love over the years. The new 4Runner will be arriving in showrooms in the fall, with details such as pricing and fuel economy ratings to be released closer to its launch date.

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner marks a significant update to the iconic SUV, with a new design inspired by the recently redesigned Toyota Tacoma pickup. With the addition of a hybrid engine option and new high-end trims, the 4Runner aims to offer a refreshed look and enhanced features while maintaining its rugged appeal. As Toyota continues to focus on improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions across its lineup, the new 4Runner represents a step towards a more sustainable future for the company’s trucks and SUVs.
