Dr. John Wiseman, Victoria’s oldest practicing doctor at 96 years old, has had a long and fulfilling career in the medical field. Wiseman married nurse Moreen in 1955, and together they had five children. For 16 years, the couple worked in the industrial town of Morwell, providing medical care in patients’ homes and in the community. Wiseman was known as a “jack of all trades”, delivering babies, giving anesthesia, and treating various patients at all hours of the day. Despite Moreen’s passing several years ago, Wiseman continues to work at a GP clinic in Melbourne, where he is beloved by both his patients and colleagues.

Wiseman’s colleague Dr. Tony Helman regards him as an inspiration, noting Wiseman’s sharp medical mind and compassionate care for his patients. Wiseman has witnessed significant changes in general practice over his career, particularly in the increased focus on mental health. While mental health was not a priority for doctors 30 years ago, it is now a major consideration due to the complexities of modern life. Wiseman reflects on the past when doctors had more time to spend with patients, providing emotional support and guidance in addition to medical treatment. Today, mental health has become a significant aspect of healthcare.

Despite his age, Wiseman shows no signs of slowing down and plans to continue to be active in his retirement. He believes in doing what you enjoy and recommends that others do the same. Wiseman plans to engage in volunteer work to stay busy and maintain his mental sharpness. He emphasizes the importance of staying active and engaged in activities that stimulate the mind, noting that it is never too late to pursue new interests or hobbies. Wiseman’s positive attitude and passion for medicine have been key factors in his longevity and successful career as a doctor.

Wiseman’s dedication to his patients and his commitment to providing quality care have earned him the respect and admiration of those around him. Despite the challenges and changes in the medical field over the years, Wiseman has remained steadfast in his approach to patient care, always putting the needs of his patients first. His compassionate nature and willingness to go above and beyond for those in his care are qualities that have made him a beloved and respected figure in the medical community. As he prepares to retire from the practice of medicine, Wiseman leaves behind a legacy of excellence and professionalism that will long be remembered by all who have had the privilege of knowing him.
