Italian backpacker killed in crash on way to his farewell party

A young Italian backpacker has died in a crash north of Perth on Friday, just a day before he was due to fly out of Australia.

Jacopo Martini, 23, was on his way to a farewell party, before jetting off the next morning, when the car he was a passenger in collided with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction in Lancelin.

Martini was with three others in a red Mitsubishi which smashed into a Toyota Hilux ute on Indian Ocean Drive at the intersection of Lancelin Rd at 6.40pm, WA Police report.

Martini, known to his friends as Apo, died at the scene.

The Mitsubishi driver — Luca Calliari, 24, who was a fellow traveller from the north of Italy — sustained critical injuries and was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

“A further two adult passengers from the Mitsubishi sustained serious injuries in the crash and were conveyed to Joondalup Health Campus and Royal Perth Hospital for treatment,” WA Police said.

“A 29-year-old male driver of the Toyota Hilux and his two adult passengers sustained minor injuries.”

Martini and three fellow travellers were on their way to a farewell party at a friend’s house before flying to Bali the next morning as they made their way home to Italy, the West Australian reports.

Martini, Calliari, and Martini’s older brother Giuseppe — who was not in the vehicle — had just finished three months of rural work, driving harvesting machinery at Sumich West Hill Farm.

The West Australian reported Martini’s uncle told local media in Italy that the 23-year-old “was our little one, always friendly, always available, always very sweet”.

“He was happy and outgoing,” the uncle said.

“He was about to close his adventure in Australia and was ready to go home. He wanted to be there for the birth of his future nephew.”

A childhood friend who lived, worked and studied with Martini wrote on Instagram: “We promised each other many things (for) when you returned, it was so close that all of this seems impossible! But unfortunately, your return will never be.

“I know that your memory will remain in my heart forever. I only ask you one thing; protect me from up there and hold my hand at any time (so) that I will never get bored.”

Friends have set up a GoFundMe “to help Jacopo’s family, in particular to support the considerable costs involved in repatriation to Italy.

“Parents, siblings, all loved ones, friends and people who care about him would like him to come home, we would like to have him back here with us.”

Police investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident urge anyone with dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
