‘Incredible actions’: Darwin kids help police thwart alleged abduction of five-year-old

Northern Territory police have thanked the efforts of two children who were quick to call triple-zero when they spotted an alleged abduction of a five-year-old boy on a suburban Darwin street.

Police have arrested a 37-year-old man, believed to be the child’s stepfather and 56-year-old woman, known to the child.

Both are assisting police with their investigation, but are expected to be charged with serious harm offences and abduction.

Police allege the five-year-old was found safe in their car when it was apprehended on Cox Peninsula Road.

The child’s mother was taken to hospital in a stable condition, after falling on the road when she tried to intervene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Russell said two children who witnessed the incident helped officers track down the vehicle.

“Police would like to commend the incredible actions of a young boy and girl who witnessed the incident on Witherden Street and contacted police,” he said.

“Not only did they contact police as the abduction was unfolding, they also passed on the vehicles details and registration”

“This information was vital in allowing our officers to begin tracking the vehicle quickly, resulting in a positive outcome.”

Alleged abductors known to family

Police said they received reports a five-year-old boy was abducted from Witherden Street, Nakara, by his stepfather and a woman known to the child at 3pm.

They said the boy’s mother was injured when she intervened as the five-year-old was being put into the car.

Detectives were immediately deployed to track the vehicle and arrested the pair at 5.30pm in Darwin’s rural area.

Russell said the woman was expected to make a full recovery.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.
