How Purple Wiggle is taking the world by storm after ‘thirst trap’ video goes viral

The Wiggles has entertained children for years, but now one of its members, the new purple Wiggle, seems to be attracting attention all of his own.

Parents and non parents alike have been thirsting after 31-year-old John Pearce, upon noticing his colourful skivvy is simply a foil for his, er, sculpted body and smouldering good looks.

Pearce has been a member of the globally popular children’s entertainment group since 2021, singing lullabies and originals such as I’m John, I’m Strong!

But in the past week, he’s seen a surge of popularity with adults, earning him TikTok heartthrob status.

The newfound attention likely stems from a video Pearce posted this month in which he participated in a trend that stems from the movie Zoolander.

The trend plays out by having two different people or personas bumping into one another.

Pearce had wanted to film the clip with the original purple Wiggle, Jeff Fatt, while the two were on a recent tour together.

When Pearce returned home and realised he’d forgotten to film the video, he decided to do it alone.

In the clip, Pearce’s purple Wiggle persona bumps into his everyday self, dressed in a cutoff T-shirt which reveals his toned and tattooed arms.

It’s been said the video falls under the “thirst trap” social media genre, where sexy images or videos are shared in order to prompt commenters to declare their attraction.

Comments on Pearce’s video have all shared a similar sentiment.

“Bro, I’m going to start watching the Wiggles and I don’t even have a kid,” one reply reads.

Pearce’s ‘Zoolander’ video had more than 5.2 million views as of January 27.

His other videos as the purple Wiggle have also had millions of views, and the hashtag #purplewiggle had more than 2.8 million views.

Speaking on Sunrise on Friday about the recent surge in popularity, Pearce said it was “insane to think that something that I created online for a bit of a laugh has taken a turn.

“It’s definitely an overwhelmingly positive response but it’s all good for Wiggles I think.”

The entertainer told Sunrise that, while he hoped for popularity with the Wiggles’ target audience of young children, he did not expect such a reaction from their mums.

“I expected a few laughs and a few comments here and there,” he said.

“But you know, it’s getting emails and messages from different media outlets in the US asking me about TikToks.

“I was thinking, ‘What’s all this about?’

“The TikToks are something that I made for fun.”

One of the mums is Sunrise’s very own presenter Edwina Bartholomew who made the on-air request to get Pearce on the show following his “thirst trap videos” earlier in the week.

“He is causing a real sensation among the mums and the dads… let’s get him on the show, let’s see if John’s available,” Eddy had said.

“Let’s see if John’s available to be a thirst trap Iive on Sunrise. We’ll get some mums around the table,” she joked.
