12-year-old Kyan Pennell was killed when he became caught between a trailer and a gate in an accident at his family’s Queensland property on January 31.

After his death, his mother Amanda Brierley’s discovered an unfinished piano composition her son had been writing in secret.

She put the call-out on social media for help in finishing the musical score in the hopes of hearing what her boy had been working on.

Orchestras and musicians from across the country and around the world answered her plea and recorded pieces that were played at Kyan’s funeral this week.

In an emotional interview with Sunrise, Ms Brierely said she was thankful to all involved for giving her such a “special gift” at an incredibly difficult time.

“I didn’t expect to get this kind of response. Everyone has been so willing to help and to bring a little piece of our boy so that we could keep forever,” she said.

“They’ve given me something that I can never repay them for.

“It’s a gift of listening to Kyan, listening to what he could have done and the potential that he had.”

Ms Brierley explained that she didn’t actually know” her son had been composing music as he only started playing less than a year ago.

“He started seven months ago when we happened to stay in an Airbnb that had an upright piano,” she explained.

Upon returning home, Kyan continued with his new hobby and “got really good,” even “scrimping and saving” to purchase a digital piano.

“The tragedy of it was that he had headphones in all the time, so I didn’t know how good he was getting,” she added.

“I’ll never know what his composition was actually meant to sound like, but what people have given us is such as special gift.”
