Five injured, four horses dead in horror crash on Tasmanian highway

Five people were injured and four horses are dead in a serious crash on a major Tasmanian highway.

Emergency services were called to the Batman Hwy near Rowella about 1.45am on Monday after an occupant’s Triple Zero iPhone Crash Function was activated.

Tasmania Police said a white Ford Ranger carrying the five people – aged 14 to 20 – was towing a horse float when it left the road and crashed into a tree stump.

The five occupants were treated for various injuries and taken to Launceston General Hospital.

An 18-year-old passenger with serious injuries will be transported to Melbourne for further treatment.

Another passenger – aged 17 – is set to be transported to Royal Hobart Hospital for further treatment.

Two of the horses died on impact, while another two were euthanised, police said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
