She finally got around to having a skin check after noticing a “new little freckle” on the back of her leg.
“This is your sign to go get your skin checked,” she told her 16.7million followers in an Instagram video on Friday.
Hembrow added that she had told the doctor she thought the spot was “harmless”, but a biopsy revealed it to be melanoma.
“I went back this morning and (the doctor) had to take a big chunk out of my leg,” she revealed, showing where the melanoma had been removed behind her knee.
“I’ve got about 30 stitches, and now I have to go back every three months for a full skin check to make sure that it isn’t coming back.”
She added that she felt “super, super lucky” that doctors spotted and removed the skin cancer quickly.
Hembrow said her last skin check was about a year ago and she hadn’t been “the most diligent person” when it came to being sun safe.
“As you know, I’m in the sun all the time,” she said.
“I go to the beach all the time.
“I live for the ocean.
“I feel like an idiot now, to be honest.
“Because it’s just one of those things you don’t think will happen to you, until it does.”
The Gold Coast-based influencer concluded by saying the skin cancer scare had been a massive “wake-up call” and she was now going to be more diligent about sun safety.
Hembrow often posts pictures of herself at the beach or outdoors in bikinis, soaking up the sun.
She said she would now make sure she applied SPF50+ sunscreen and wore a hat whenever she was out in the sun, adding that she had instructed her team to get skin checks too.
“Just don’t be stupid like me and think that you’re somehow invincible, because you’re not,” she said.
