A friend told 7NEWS Hayes’ head “bounced off the concrete”.

Detectives and forensics returned to the scene on Monday, marking out blood splatter on the concrete and asking neighbouring businesses for video.

Gold Coast Police Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said the attack was a “serious incident”.

“We’ve established an investigation centre and we’re in the process of trying to ascertain what actually happened,” he said.

It is understood the victim is a bikie associate.

Hayes remains at the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Police are still searching for his attacker.
