Diamonds star taken down and out in bruising netball battle with South Africa

The Australian Diamonds are set for the Netball Quad Series final after battling their way through a physical contest against hosts South Africa to win 65-48.

Star Aussie shooter Sophie Garbin bore the brunt of South Africa’s desperation when she was flattened by a heavy hit from goalkeeper Phumza Maweni during the third quarter, leaving her reeling in the centre of play.

Continuing their unbeaten run following back-to-back victories over England and New Zealand, Stacey Marinkovich’s side lead at each break against South Africa.

The side started slowly in their two previous Quad Series matches but managed strong momentum from the start, despite resting leadership pair Liz Watson and Steph Wood – who had starred in Sunday’s 59-57 victory over the Silver Ferns.

Powerful defender Courtney Bruce remained on the bench while Ash Brazill, back in the side for her first series since returning to the AFLW, shone for the Diamonds with a high-energy performance at wing defence.

The Diamonds will now turn their attention to the World Cup holders, the New Zealand Silver Ferns, who defeated the England Roses by 10 to book their spot in the final.
