Switzerland’s government announced plans to host a high-level international conference in June to aid in peace efforts in Ukraine after more than two years of conflict. The conference is set to take place at the Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne and will bring together government officials from over 100 countries. Russian involvement in the peace process is crucial, despite their absence from the initial meeting. The Swiss government stressed the importance of eventual Russian participation in any peace agreement regarding Ukraine.

President Joe Biden may attend the conference, but White House officials have not confirmed any travel plans as of yet. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed skepticism about the peace talks, stating that negotiations must consider Moscow’s interests. Russian President Vladimir Putin has insisted that peace in Ukraine hinges upon Russia’s goals being met. The Swiss president emphasized that the conference is just a starting point and could lead to future meetings involving Russia.

The Swiss government has worked with the European Union and countries from the Global South to arrange the conference. Foreign Minister Cassis highlighted the Swiss tradition of shuttle diplomacy and the country’s sense of responsibility in contributing to peace efforts in Ukraine. U.S. participation in the conference has been confirmed and is seen as essential. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has presented a 10-point peace plan, including the removal of Russian forces from Ukraine and accountability for war crimes, which has been rejected by Moscow.

One key diplomatic uncertainty is the potential attendance of China, a key ally of Russia. Beijing has presented its own peace proposal for Ukraine but has not yet confirmed its participation in the upcoming conference. China’s Foreign Ministry has indicated that their support depends on the acceptance of Russia and Ukraine, which has not been achieved at this point. The Bürgenstock resort has a history of hosting diplomatic events, and the upcoming conference will be another opportunity for countries to come together and work towards a peaceful resolution.

The Swiss government views the conference as a crucial first step in the peace process for Ukraine, with the hope that it will pave the way for constructive dialogue and cooperation among all parties involved. While challenges and uncertainties remain, efforts are being made to potentially involve Russia and other key players in future negotiations. The success of the conference will depend on the willingness of all countries to engage in meaningful discussions and make concessions for the sake of peace in Ukraine. Ultimately, the goal is to find a lasting resolution that addresses the root causes of the conflict and ensures stability in the region.
