With the presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle fast approaching, CNN has revealed more details about the rules agreed upon by the Trump and Biden campaigns. The debate, to be hosted by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash in Atlanta on June 27, will be the first face-to-face confrontation between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Both candidates have accepted the network’s invitation and agreed to adhere to the rules and format of the debate, as outlined in letters sent to the campaigns in May. The 90-minute debate will feature two commercial breaks, and campaign staff will not be allowed to interact with their candidate during that time.

During the debate, both candidates have agreed to speak from a uniform podium, with their positions determined by a coin flip. Microphones will be muted when it is not a candidate’s turn to speak, and no props or pre-written notes will be allowed on the stage. However, candidates will be provided with a pen, a pad of paper, and a bottle of water. Some aspects, such as the absence of a studio audience, will be different from past debates, but the moderators plan to enforce timing and ensure a civilized discussion.

To participate in the debate, candidates must meet certain qualifications, including the requirements outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution to serve as president. Biden, Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein have all met these requirements and have filed a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission. Additionally, participants must appear on enough state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold and receive at least 15% in four separate national polls that meet CNN’s reporting standards.

While Biden and Trump are likely to meet the debate requirements, Kennedy, who has received at least 15% in three qualifying polls and is on the ballot in six states, may also qualify. Currently, Kennedy is eligible for 89 Electoral College votes, but it may be challenging for other candidates running on non-major-party tickets to meet the criteria. Overall, the debate will provide a platform for the candidates to discuss their policies and engage with each other in a structured and controlled environment.
