Former President Donald J. Trump, two days before his first criminal trial in Manhattan, once again framed the charges against him as part of a Democratic effort to prevent him from returning to the White House. Despite the judge’s gag order in the New York case, Mr. Trump criticized the proceedings, referring to them as a “communist show trial” orchestrated by President Biden, although the case has no connection to the current president. Mr. Trump positioned himself as a victim of political persecution, standing up for his supporters.

Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, Mr. Trump addressed his impending trial, assuring his followers that he was taking the stand on their behalf. He portrayed the trial as a spectacle for his followers to observe, emphasizing his role as their defender against political attacks. Although the trial itself will not be televised, Mr. Trump frequently utilizes press conferences and rallies after the proceedings to continue his political messaging.

The rally took place amidst an Iranian aerial attack on Israel, to which Mr. Trump responded by expressing support and prayers for the country. Blaming President Biden for the conflict in Gaza, Mr. Trump suggested that the situation would not have occurred if he had won the 2020 election. The audience at the rally chanted “Genocide Joe,” highlighting their opposition to Mr. Biden’s policies regarding Israel.

Reiterating his false claims of winning the 2020 election, Mr. Trump alleged that Democrats cheated him out of victory, despite President Biden winning Pennsylvania by a significant margin. He continued to sow doubt about the integrity of the election, encouraging his supporters to protest against what he perceives as fraudulent practices. Mr. Trump’s rhetoric surrounding voter fraud is not supported by evidence.

In addition to critiquing the trial itself, Mr. Trump also criticized the gag order imposed on him, prohibiting him from publicly attacking certain individuals involved in the case. While he expressed frustration at not being able to speak freely, Mr. Trump framed the restriction as an infringement on his constitutional rights. Refusing to stay silent, Mr. Trump continued to advocate for his narrative and defend his position against the legal challenges he faces in court.
