May has been a busy month for companies in the tech space announcing new AI capabilities for their products. Following the likes of OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, Honor has unveiled a 4-layer AI architecture for MagicOS, its Android skin. The company has also partnered with Google Cloud to offer Gen-AI experiences on its devices and aims to enhance the portrait experience with AI in the upcoming number series. Honor has teamed up with Paris’s Harcourt Studio, known for its black-and-white celebrity portraits.

The 4-layer AI architecture introduced by Honor is designed to create an “open ecosystem” using cross-device and cross-OS AI as the foundation. This will enable the sharing of computing power and services among devices and operating systems while allowing for personalized phone interactions through resource allocation and intent-based human-computer interaction. The company’s approach seems similar to Apple’s Continuity feature but with the added element of AI integration.

Honor plans to leverage generative AI at the app level within its 4-layer AI architecture to enhance the user experience. The top layer, Cloud AI, partners with Google to assist with privacy and offer Gen-AI experiences on Honor devices. It will be interesting to see how these use cases differ from those of other companies in the space. While the global rollout of features like the Magic Capsule eye tracking feature is still pending, Honor has a history of developing innovative features, creating anticipation for further advancements.

In a separate announcement related to the upcoming Honor 200 series, the company has collaborated with Harcourt Studio in Paris to enhance its portrait photography experience. Unlike other smartphone manufacturers that partner with camera makers for lens-making or software tuning, Honor is working with Harcourt Studio’s expertise in portrait photography. The company aims to fine-tune its AI-enhanced portrait experience by leveraging a vast dataset of Harcourt Studio portraits to replicate their entire photography process.

Honor claims to have broken down the portrait photography process into 9 distinct steps using AI learning from the Harcourt Studio dataset. The company is set to launch the Honor 200 series on June 12, and the pre-orders have already begun in China through the official website. The devices are expected to feature a dual-tone design on the back, a smaller front camera cutout compared to the Magic 6 Pro, and a 50MP primary camera. Additionally, the Honor 200 and 200 Pro are rumored to come with a 5,200mAh battery and support 100W fast charging.

Overall, Honor is making significant strides in integrating AI into its products with the introduction of a 4-layer AI architecture and partnerships with industry leaders like Google Cloud and Harcourt Studio. The company’s emphasis on offering personalized and enhanced user experiences through AI-driven features sets it apart in the competitive smartphone market. Consumers can look forward to innovative advancements in portrait photography and device interactions from Honor in the near future.
