A veteran teacher at an upper-crust Massachusetts boarding and day school for girls, Matthew Rutledge, resigned amid allegations of grooming students for sex during his 30-plus years at Miss Hall’s School. He was placed on administrative leave in March and later resigned after a former student, Melissa Fares, reported him for allegedly sexually abusing and exploiting her. Two other women have since come forward with similar claims, prompting an external investigation by the school.

Julia Heaton, the head of school, responded to the reports by stating that Miss Hall’s School is initiating a neutral, external investigation in response to the information provided by the women who came forward. Attorney Eric MacLeish, known for representing victims of Catholic priests’ sex abuse, stated that since Fares came forward, three women have signed representation agreements with him and another lawyer.

Founded in 1898, Miss Hall’s School is one of the first girls’ boarding schools in New England, catering to girls in grades 9 through 12. The school has a reputation for offering a quality education in a progressive environment. Despite this reputation, Rutledge allegedly preyed on students over a span of several years. Nancy Ault, president of the board of trustees, confirmed that three alumnae have come forward with allegations of misconduct against Rutledge between 2001 and 2010.

Fares, a former student and freelance journalist, described Rutledge’s abuse and exploitation in a post on a private Facebook group. She explained that Rutledge used his position as a teacher and advisor to groom her for his own gratification. Former students also recalled rumors of inappropriate relationships with students during their time at the school. Rutledge, who served in various roles at the school, including teacher, advisor, department chair, coach, and resident, could not be reached for comment.

Alumni of Miss Hall’s School have expressed shock and sadness over the allegations against Rutledge, who had a charismatic and popular presence among students and staff. Two other women have since come forward with similar experiences, prompting the school to take action and pursue an investigation into the allegations. The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families and the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office have been informed of the situation.

The school administration has been commended for their handling of the situation and encouraging alumnae to speak out against Rutledge’s misconduct. Fares and other women who have come forward with their experiences have been acknowledged for their courage in sharing their stories. Despite the allegations, Miss Hall’s School remains committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for its students and addressing any instances of misconduct that may arise.
