Former President Donald Trump is actively trying to appeal to Black voters by making inaccurate claims about his achievements regarding Black unemployment and poverty rates. During a roundtable discussion at a Black church in Detroit, Trump stated that he achieved record lows for African American unemployment and poverty rates during his presidency, implying that he had done more for the Black community than President Joe Biden. However, the facts show that while Trump did achieve record lows in these areas during his tenure, Biden has since surpassed those records, with new record lows being set under his administration.

The Black or African American unemployment rate reached its record low of 4.8% in April 2023 under Biden, beating the record set during Trump’s presidency. Similarly, the record low for Black individual poverty rate of 17.1% was set in 2022 under Biden, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 under Trump. Different methods of measuring poverty also show that Biden’s administration has achieved lower rates of Black individual poverty compared to Trump’s presidency.

While Trump’s claims about record low Black unemployment and poverty rates during his presidency are technically true, they are not accurate when compared to the current records set under President Biden. The official data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources demonstrate that Biden’s administration has seen even lower rates of Black unemployment and poverty, showing that Trump’s assertions are not entirely truthful.

It is essential to look at the historical context of these economic indicators and recognize that factors beyond the president’s control can influence these rates. For example, the Black unemployment rate in January 2021 was 9.3%, reflecting the early impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused a sudden increase in unemployment rates across the board. These fluctuations highlight the complexity of economic data and the need to consider multiple factors when evaluating presidential performance.

Despite Trump’s attempts to paint himself as a champion for the Black community based on his economic achievements, the reality is that President Biden’s administration has overseen even lower levels of Black unemployment and poverty rates. By accurately examining the data and comparing the records of both administrations, it becomes clear that Biden has achieved significant progress in improving economic conditions for Black individuals, surpassing the previous records set during Trump’s presidency. Ultimately, it is crucial for voters to consider the facts and assess the true impact of each administration on the Black community when casting their ballots.
