Steve Bannon, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, made incendiary comments at a conservative gathering, vowing investigations and prosecutions of those who have probed Trump and his political allies. Bannon declared that Inauguration Day in 2025 would be “accountability day” where Trump’s allies would be investigated, prosecuted, and incarcerated. Bannon referenced Trump’s recent conviction in New York and pointed to his supporters being investigated. He insisted that this had to do with justice and not revenge or retribution, echoing recent statements made by Trump himself.

Despite calls from friendly interviewers to dial back his rhetoric, Trump has continued to make threats of retaliation against his political opponents and over his criminal prosecutions. Some of Trump’s allies have downplayed his comments, while others have responded more forcefully, demanding testimony on the prosecution of Trump. Republican senators have also signed a letter signifying they will not work with the Biden administration on certain matters, in response to Trump’s conviction in New York.

Bannon’s speech comes shortly before he is due to report to prison for contempt of Congress after failing to provide documents and testimony to the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. No longer a top Trump insider, Bannon is now a right-wing podcaster with a loyal following of Trump supporters. He has been influential in conservative circles, taking credit for the removal of prominent Republican figures and promoting false claims of election fraud.

Bannon rallied the crowd around Trump’s recent conviction in New York, claiming that Trump could face up to 700 years in prison. He pointed to other Trump allies who have been prosecuted and suggested that ordinary citizens could also face prison time. Bannon called on the audience to be the “vanguard of this revolution” and vowed to “purge” the Justice Department and “take apart” the FBI. He set a deadline of November 5 as “judgment day” and Inauguration Day in 2025 as “accountability day.”

Trump’s sentencing in the New York case is set for July 11, where he could face probation or up to four years in state prison on each count. Bannon’s speech reflects a growing trend of increasing confrontation and polarization in American politics, as allies of Trump and his supporters continue to push back against legal consequences for their actions. The future remains uncertain as the political landscape becomes more fraught with tensions and divisions.
