A series of tornadoes wreaked havoc across the middle of the US, causing extensive damage and claiming several lives. Small towns in Oklahoma were heavily impacted by the severe weather, with homes and buildings flattened and at least four people, including an infant, losing their lives. The storms also injured over 100 people, damaged a rural hospital, and left thousands without power. Tornadoes in Iowa and Nebraska on Friday also caused widespread destruction, resulting in one death.

In Sulphur, Oklahoma, a town of about 5,000 people, the tornado crumpled downtown buildings, tossed cars and buses, and sheared the roofs off houses over a 15-block radius. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt described the destruction as unbelievable, with almost every business in the downtown area being destroyed. About 30 people were injured in Sulphur, including individuals who were in a bar when the tornado struck, resulting in significant damage.

Hospitals across the state reported approximately 100 injuries, including people who were hit by debris or cut during the storms. White House officials confirmed that President Joe Biden spoke to Governor Stitt and offered full support from the federal government. The severe weather in Oklahoma was part of a larger outbreak of tornadoes that have caused havoc in the nation’s midsection since Friday, resulting in additional deaths in Iowa and Oklahoma.

Residents in Sulphur were left devastated by the tornado, with buildings destroyed, windows and doors blown out, and vehicles overturned. The community was faced with the daunting challenge of rebuilding amidst the wreckage. Search efforts were underway to locate missing individuals, including those who were in a destroyed bar during the tornado. The storm also caused fatalities near the town of Holdenville and along Interstate 35 in southern Oklahoma, adding to the tragic toll.

The severe weather in Oklahoma also brought dangerous flooding and water rescues, further complicating recovery efforts. Rising lake levels led to the closure of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, where essential infrastructure was destroyed by the storms. Governor Stitt declared a state of emergency in 12 counties affected by the severe weather, providing resources and assistance to the impacted communities. Residents sought shelter in places like the Sulphur High School gym, where they huddled as the tornado passed overhead.

Communities in other states like Nebraska and Iowa were also dealing with the aftermath of tornadoes that caused significant damage to homes and businesses. The tornadoes near Omaha, Nebraska, and surrounding areas left a trail of destruction, with homes and subdivisions being demolished. Several people were injured, but there were no reported fatalities. State officials in Nebraska and Iowa were assessing the damage and seeking federal assistance to support recovery efforts in the affected areas. Overall, the destructive outbreak of severe weather across multiple states highlighted the vulnerability of communities in the face of natural disasters.
